|| The Good Book
We very rarely realize that when we pick up a book to read, it is much like the food that we eat. We search for it in a state of hunger, for we have appetite to know more than we already know. Once found, we savor on it, consuming it as we become filled with such knowledge. When we get closer to the end pages, we begin to slow down as we realize our point of satiety is becoming realized, for we are now filled. And in that moment, we may perhaps rest the book down.
Though some books be sweet and savory to the tongue, others may leave a very bitter taste. Yet, some leave you with that warm sensation. Still, others are crude to the core. And still, some are quite spicy, too hot for casual consumption. To each his own. Whatever the case, not all books are good books, for it depends on the type of feeding and nourishment that we actually need for that point in time. Would you solely eat a 5g block of chocolate candy right before embarking on a 15 km long journey's walk?
We first need an appetite for the book before we can even begin to read. Contemplate then, on your primary needs and objectives before casually choosing the kinds of books that you may read. For what you consume, you become. For to build the muscles of your life, you need that proteinaceous raw materials of the books that sit in front of you.
Just as time is needed for sentimental digestion, when the gut decides what to keep and what to discard, so too is the mind that filters all thought as it chews on the word, assimilating what it needs and discarding the rest. Some books may fill you for the moment, yet you still search in hunger, for you haven't been fully satiated. Others may fill you up on just one sentence. Discern then, the quality of your choice meal when dining in the library of the limitless resource of your books.
